Dan Barry

Barry is a former NASA astronaut and a veteran of three space flights, four spacewalks and two trips to the International Space Station. He retired from NASA in 2005 and started his own company, Denbar Robotics that creates robotic assistants for home and commercial use, concentrating on assistive devices for people with disabilities. In 2011 he co-founded 9th Sense, a company that sells telepresence robots. He is a licensed physician and holds advanced degrees in electrical engineering and computer science.

He has seven patents, has published over 50 articles in scientific journals, and has served on two scientific journal editorial boards. He has film and television experience as well, including roles in two documentary films and as a cast member in season 12 of the CBS show Survivor.

His research interests include robotics, especially telepresence and robotic assistance for people with disabilities, signal processing, with an emphasis on joint time-frequency methods, and human adaptation to extreme environments. Barry has given speeches and presentations on many topics including the experience of traveling in space, adapting to new challenges and environments, as well as robotics, creativity, and competition.
