Luke was born in Auckland, New Zealand and grew up tinkering with computers and building gadgets. He is a PhD candidate in computer science and computational biology at MIT. Luke has spent the last two years studying intensive Chinese as a hobby while completing his PhD. He is very interested in North Korean human rights as well as skydiving and global off-the-tourist-track travel. Luke is an avid Android hacker and all-around tech geek.
Education:
Luke holds B.Sc.(Hons) and M.S. degrees in computer science, and is completing a Ph.D. in computer Science and computational biology at MIT with Bonnie Berger of CSAIL and Zak Kohane of the Harvard Medical School. Luke’s Ph.D. research involves integrative datamining of genomic features that regulate cell division and tissue differentiation, with the goal of controlling tissue repair and regrowth.

Luke was Director of Bioinformatics for the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation for two years between his MS and PhD degrees.
